One phrase that you'll never hear in Byron Bay is “I'm bored”. With the ocean at its feet and the beautiful Hinterland by its side, with fabulous weather, an abundance of creative locals, and an emphasis on getting involved, Byron Bay is home to more activities than you could possibly work through during your holiday. Regardless of your age, interests, or the size of your travelling group or budget, you'll find something to do that you'll be talking about for months afterwards.
If you're a sea-lover, you'll find plenty of ocean-based activities to occupy your days in Byron Bay. Some highlights include ocean kayaking alongside dolphins and turtles, diving and snorkelling, surfing and boogie boarding, and stand-up paddle boarding. Lessons and supervised activities are available, so whether you're a novice or a seasoned professional, you'll be well looked after. And if you’re here in the right season, take in a whale watching tour to see these amazing creatures up close. It’s an encounter you won’t forget in a hurry.
For active types there are plenty of options that don't require you to get wet. You might canter along the beach on a horse or a pony, spend a day or two on the golf course, or opt for a game of tennis. You can also see Byron Bay from up high by booking a balloon tour, a scenic gliding flight, or for the dare devils, a skydiving experience.
Be sure to schedule a visit to Cape Byron, the most easterly point in mainland Australia. There you’ll discover the famous lighthouse and commanding views of the beaches, inlets and cliffs and the wide blue Pacific Ocean. If you’d like to make it all as easy as possible you could book in for a half day or day tour of Bryon and its surrounds. Be escorted to the must see spots with a local expert who can fill you on the history and ins and outs of the area.
Byron Bay is hemmed in by the spectacular Hinterland region of rainforest and lush rolling hills. Take a day, or few, to explore the striking scenery, abundant wildlife and colourful villages of the area. At Nimbin, Mullumbimby, Bangalow, The Channon, and several others, you’ll discover cafes, markets, galleries and the often colourful locals.
For other activities closer to town, there is plenty of shopping, dining, gallery visits and bar-hopping to be had. There is always an abundant calendar of arts and cultural activities so always something new to be seen – or heard. Visit The Arts Factory with its restaurant, performance space and cinema to see classic or new release films. You’ll be well catered for with live music on offer on any given night around town. Or perhaps time your visit with a festival. The East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival is one of the country’s biggest, and attracts acts from Australia and internationally. Even early US blues legends have made an appearance.
Byron Bay is also a great place to take part in a short course or class. Browse local listings to discover where you can learn your own massaging skills for instance or even unleash your inner artist during a painting class. Not all activities need to be active. Byron Bay has had a longstanding love of soothing the mind and body, and it’s an ideal spot to relax and rejuvenate. Yoga and Byron Bay go hand in hand like hippies and herbal tea, so whether you’re a regular participant or have just always wanted to give Yoga a go, consider booking in for a casual class. And we all know a bit of self-indulgence never hurt anyone when it’s in the form of a long, languorous massage. There are several small practitioners in or around town, or you might even go for something truly luxurious and book into a spa at one of the beautiful resorts of the region. While there, check out the spa menu to see what else might have you leaving Byron Bay pampered and truly refreshed.
